A unique heritage project commissioned by the the Battle of Prestonpans (1745) Heritage Trust

with grant support from Historic Environment Scotland.

A series of maps of the battlefield area as it appeared in 1745 through to the present day were

created as a key feature for an exhibition titled "Beyond The Battlefield". 

The exhibition explores the landscape and landmarks of the Prestonpans battlefield and the people

who lived and worked on it at the time the battle was fought in 1745. The maps were used to help illustrate

the changes in the landscape, the growth of population and the emergence of urbanisation and industry

and from 1745 through to the present day.

Four maps were created showing the area through 18th,19th,20th and 21st century timelines.

The battle itself was shown on each map as much of the area where the main action took place has still not

been built over.Including the battle on each map provided a useful context to the growth and development of

the area from the time of the battle in 1745 through to the present day.
